What makes a good resume and what mistakes should you avoid? This pertinent question is often met with varying preferences. Career coach Jermaine L. Murray shares these resume patterns with CNBC that he prefers not to encounter:

  • Murray finds the personal summary a “...waste of valuable real estate.” The same information can be found in other sections of the resume. He says the top half plays a bigger role in impressing the recruiter and should be used to list out your experiences, skills, or certifications.
  • Don’t pack your document with irrelevant keywords.
  • Instead of cramming your resume with outdated work experiences or filler roles, it is advisable to mention the more recent and relevant ones.
  • Leave out your headshot. Instead, share your accomplishments and find creative ways to show off your skills.
